NOTES: Catalogued 2/93, DZ. (*) Old GEH accession number determined from Museum acquisition records. Variant of "Desde la Azotea" (74:061:66). "As Weston scholar Amy Conger has shown, this photograph, and Mexico City (74:061:66), were both taken about the same time. It is unknown which came first. While the subject matter is similar - a view from Weston and Modotti's home down onto a neighbor's azotea 0 the visual arrangement of form and light conspire to produce two very different photographs. With just a simple adjustment of the camera, Weston was able to create, in this particular work, a more calculated and formal image. He eliminates extraneous presences such as the water tank and street beyond the house, thus concentrating his view. This photograph becomes a play of geometric planes, lines, and the patterns inscribed by light and shadow." [Therese Mulligan, 1/97]
