NOTES: Cataloged by J. Buerger. "The Eastman House recently (1980) acquired a rare published portfolio of twenty-five photomechanically produced pictures of Chartres (in Thiel's 'encre grasse' process) made from Le Secq's paper negatives of 1852 and undoubtedly printed under his direction." [Janet Buerger, "Le Secq's 'Monuments' and Chartres Cathedral Portfolio," Image, June 1980, p. 1-2] Luis Nadeau's "Encyclopedia of Printing, Photographic, and Photomechanical Processes" defines Thiel's encre grass (greasy ink) process as a form of photolithography.
