NOTES:
According to M. & M. Auer in the --Photographers Encyclopedia
International 1839-Present--, 1985, this album dates to 1859 and was
commissioned by Baron James de Rothschild to document the Lyon -
Mediterranean line of the Chemins de Fer de Paris. Jammes and Janis
date this album to ca. 1855 in --The Art of French Calotype--, 1982,
and indicate that the album included earlier work by Baldus from prior
projects. In addition, they state that the Lyon-Mediterranean album is
considered to be "...the most beautiful French photographic album of
the nineteenth century...". However, Malcolm Daniel dates this album
to after 1861 (see --Image--, vol. 35, no. 3-4). According to Janis,
Daniel's research and dating of this material is the most accurate and
complete to date.
