NOTES: Catalogued 10/93, DZ. "In the spring of 1887 Emerson stayed at Rye House, Hoddington Herts, to execute a commission for illustrations to R.B. Marston's centenary edition of Izaak Walton's --Compleat Angler.-- He photographed along the River Lea, while the photographs of the River Dove were taken by George Bankart, president of the Leicester Photographic Society. As Emerson said, 'the old and new style of photography can be nicely compared in this edition, the Derbyshire photographs being the work of an expert of the old "Sharp School".' The plates were reproduced by the Typo-etching Company without any retouching. However Emerson did not supervise their work and he was not satisfied with the results." [Life and Landscape: P.H. Emerson Art & Photography in East Anglia 1885-1900--, p. 36] "Plates 2-28 by P.H. Emerson, plates 30-54 by George Bankart, president of Leicester Photographic Society." [Ibid, p. 122] "This Demy Quatro Edition is limited strictly to 500 copies, of which this copy is No. 310" "Printed by William Clowes and Sons, Limited..."
