Title from "List of Plates". --On English Lagoons-- contains 15
photogravure plates and 18 halftone text illustrations. Only the
photogravures have been catalogued.
"--On English Lagoons-- was written as an account of a year-long
voyage on the Broads in 1890 by 'two amateur wherrymen', in this case
Emerson and his servant Jim, aboard Emerson's own wherry, 'The Maid of
the Mist'...
This trip ... could have been his most fruitful, as at least he had
the long stretch of time in the countryside which he had been
advocating as essential for true naturalists. Instead he decided by
the end of the trip that photography, though very charming, was not
art...
He nevertheless persued the production of --On English Lagoons--,
which includes the result of an experiment in naturalistic photography
by moonlight, tinted blue in the photogravure. Emerson etched all the
plates himself...having learnt the process in 1889..." [--Life and
