Martha Graham, dancer

American (b. Allegany, Pennsylvania, 1894-1991)

Regarded as the pioneer of American modern dance, Graham did not begin formal training until she was sixteen. After appearing with dance companies and on Broadway, she taught and performed at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York (1924-1926). Graham formed her own dance company during the 1920s and created innovative presentations, including works based on American art, American history and Greek myths. Her choreography continues to influence contemporary dancers.
