Gloria Swanson, actor, born Gloria Josephine Mae Swenson

American (b. Chicago, Illinois, 1897-1983)

The silent-screen beauty exemplified glamour on and off the screen. Swanson produced her own films during the late 1920s, but lost the majority of her money. Although she made the transition to sound, Swanson retired from the screen in 1934. With an occassional return to acting, Swanson received an Oscar nomination for her performance in the film Sunset Boulevard (1950). Swanson's other films include For Better, For Worse (1919), Sadie Thompson (1928) and Airport 1975 (1974).
