Charlie Chaplin, actor, director, producer, screenwriter, composer born Charles Spencer Chaplin
British (b. London, England, 1889-1977)
A genius of film , Chaplin is remembered for his role of Charlie the Tramp. As a child, Chaplin toured with entertainment troupes in Europe and the United States, before joining the production company, Keystone (1914). He worked with several other production companies and acquired complete creative control of his films. Chaplin formed the production company, United Artists Corporation (1919). He received special Academy Awards for The Circus (1927-1928) and for his contributions to the film industry (1972). Chaplin's films include The Tramp (1915), Easy Street (1917) and City Lights (1931).
