  "Dec. 1954-early 1958. New features include rapid wind lever, shutter
  to 1000, crank rewind, and larger viewfinder window permitting 1:1
  viewing. The top plate steps up over the new larger viewfinder, but
  the accessory shoe remains on the lower level, unlike the later S3.
  Over 56,000 produced which is more than any other Nikon rangefinder
  camera. It was the first to have the 24x36mm format, available in
  black or chrome, and accepts a motor drive." (McKeown, 1994).
