"One of the first subjects to preoccupy Modotti after her arrival in
Mexico was native architecture - adobe houses, village streets and
especially, archways. As an emerging photographer, Modotti reveled in
the formal characteristics of her subjects, the interaction of form
and light, and the unique sculptural design. Yet they also attest to
her absorption of Mexican culture as seen through the intense gaze of
the camera's eye.
Like Modotti, Weston himself would find in Mexican architecture, both
ancient and modern, a dialogue between form and light that would
resonate with his new modernist approach to picture-making." [Therese
Mulligan, 1/97]
