NOTES: Catalogued 10/87, DZ. Published title and date from --Tina Modotti: Photographs--. "Modotti photographed several images of piņatas. They were part of a larger series of folk art commissioned by publisher Frances Toor for her art and culture magazine, --Mexican Folkways--. A bilingual publication, --Mexican Folkways-- boasted many of Mexico's most eminent artists and writers as contributors and editors, including Dr. Atl, Anita Brenner, Jean Charlot and Diego Rivera. In 1927, Modotti became a contributing editor of the magazine in recognition of her growing reputation as an important photographer of Mexican culture. Modotti penned her feelings, often her dissatisfaction with a photograph, on the reverse side. This work is no exception. She wrote to Weston, 'This I rather like - I went back one day and intended to work more carefully but most of the piņatas were gone.'" [Therese Mulligan, 1/97]
